How to Check the Oil in Your Toyota in Hiawatha, IA
Regular checks of the oil in your Toyota Land Cruiser, RAV4, or other model will ensure you can make use of its full mechanical lifespan. Most customers that visit our Cedar Rapids Toyota Service Department know how to perform this task themselves. However, we’ve created this handy guide for anyone who might need a quick refresher.
Preparation
To start off with, you’ll want to park your vehicle on a level surface and wait for the engine to cool off. Even if you just went down to Tucker Park and back, a hot powertrain can cause a misreading. Once that’s done, obtain a clean rag, paper towel, or cloth. While not required, a set of gloves will help to protect your hands from getting dirty. From there, prop open the hood and locate the oil change dipstick. You will see a bright yellow or orange ring that is usually marked with the word ‘oil’. This will give you access to the reservoir so that you can determine what the fluid levels look like.
Checking the Oil
Once you’ve located the dipstick, it’s time to check the oil. Start by pulling on the ring and withdrawing the metal until you can wipe it clean with a cloth or rag. Once that’s done, you can reinsert it and remove it quickly. At the bottom of the oil dipstick, there will usually be notches or markers that will tell you how full it is. You should see that the oil is clear and at the top line. If it’s too low after many commutes down Collins Road, then schedule a service appointment with our team of certified technicians right away. The same is true if the liquid is dark or contains gritty debris inside of it, as this means that the oil is old and needs to be replaced.
Final Steps
After determining that the oil in your Toyota model is running low, you can stop by and have our team of trained mechanics perform the change. Make sure to do this regularly, especially if your car, truck, or SUV has higher mileage than average. This will protect the powertrain and keep it lubricated. Plus, you’ll want to use synthetic oil types if your car happens to be made more recently. We use the same certified types of oil in your vehicle as the original manufacturer, which helps to maintain its factory-grade performance. If you are worried about cost, then see our service specials to make regular maintenance more affordable.

“ After a couple of years with health issues, I finally took my Camry in. All checked out with a my car and all is good. I do have an issue with the information on my car’s detail. One it states my car’s odometer of 51,508, when it is really 31,508 and there is a new set of license. That item was also wrong, otherwise my Camry is good to go. I hope this can be resolved in the next check up. ”

“ It's a place that really cares about the customer's needs, and it's a place that I don't need an appointment for my first 5000 miles of care!! ”

“ If you’re looking for auto service, without question the place to go is Cedar Rapids Toyota. Service Rep Steve treats you like a person not just a name or number. I’ve been doing business with them since 1988 and wouldn’t think of going anywhere else. Simply the best! ”
“ First oil change and great service! ”
“ My 2007 Prius needed the brake accumulator replaced and they did just that, and charged me the quoted price. They were having computer issues and needed to keep the car overnight, which was clearly communicated with me once they knew. When I picked my car up, I was a little surprised they didn't wash it (if memory serves, they wash it after an oil change?), and this repair cost a lot more than an oil change. Fair price, quality work (one year warranty on both parts & labor), clear communication. Thanks for helping my old car functioning! ”
“ Everything went smoothly and they were very attentive to my phone calls and questions ”
“ Great experience! Courteous service. ”
“ Fast and efficient service. Thanks for keeping my vehicle running! ”
“ Took Camry in for brakes tire and oil change, associate told me there was a recall, they would try and get it done also. Did not have an appointment, for this visit so I figured it may take over a week to get parts ordered. Car was done in 3 days. Everyone I dealt with was pleasant, friendly and extremely helpful. I Thank all of them for their service! ”
“ Responsive to my problem with a quick solution. ”
“ Had Toyota put a new set of tires on my truck. Services was great the waiting area was comfortable. The only issue I had is it took 3hrs to get my tires put on when I had an appointment. I think they were just extremely busy today so I won’t hold it against them. I had tires installed there before and it took half the time so this was probably just a case of being really busy. ”
“ Excellent service ”
“ Fast service, priced right ”
“ The staff at Cedar Rapids Toyota always seem to go above any beyond with the assistance they give you whenever you take your vehicle in for maintenance. They’re warm and welcoming and it gives you the sense they’re taking care of your vehicle as well as they’re taking care of you. You’re not a number or a job; you’re family, and they make you feel like you’re the only customer they have. Well done, Toyota! ”
“ My son took our 2015 Corolla in because he is now the daily driver and apparently ignored the bright red flashing oil can and screaming beep, and the flashing maintenance required sign 🙄 The guys at Toyota were very friendly with him. It’s also good to note that we have been taking the car to Jiffy Lube for years because my husband insisted that a dealership would be more expensive. On a whim i called Toyota to see what they charged before having my son take it in because I knew he would prefer the Toyota amenities. I can confirm my husband was paying $40 more every time he took it in because Jiffy Lube was in fact not cheaper. They also don't serve cookies, popcorn, fountain drinks and hot cocoa and do not offer arcade games. 😂 ”
“ Helpful and service completed in a very good time ”
“ It's funny how you guys never offer me any car washes.. you guys never offer any discounts. And i feel you guys do not ever go over and beyond for your customers.. snacks are great tho.. ”
“ Brought SIENNA van in with a check engine light on. Diagnosed as needing new head gaskets and observed some front end parts needed replaced. Quoted me $6000.00 for new head gaskets and new sensors. Also gave me an approximate cost of $3000.00 for front end work. Took it somewhere else. Turns out it didn’t need head gaskets. Only a sensor. Got front end work done and total cost was $1160.00 ”
“ This Dealership is the prime example of why many people call the dealership a stealership. My sister who I was traveling with had an issue with her Toyota rav4. She needed to get the issue resolved as soon as possible since it would restrain her from getting home and we were hundreds of miles from home. The dealership did not answer the call the first two times. When she spoke to the folks who handle repairs the individual was very much so aggressive and unprofessional. He was of no help and lied about specific detail with Toyotas warrantys. I'm a big fan of Toyota. I've told all my family to get a Toyota product. My mom owns a Lexus, I have owned 2 Toyota products and 2 Lexus products. My sister has owned 2 Toyotas as well. With this very bad experience it's left such a bad impression on my sister that not only does she not want to deal with this Dealership again but she wants to leave the car brand as a whole. How do you do business so bad that this is what you do to dedicated Toyota customers. I highly recommend going anywhere else other than this stealership. They are not to be trusted and they are a stain on the Toyota/Lexus brand as a whole. The service center rep also has no business in customer care if he can't he professional, cordial, and composed. Also, I e owned a Subaru and highly recommend buying that if your purchasing a vehicle. As well Honda is a great company to buy from and get your vehicle repaired with. Just stay away from here and Toyota. ”
“ My tired blew and the rim was damaged. I tried to come here to get fixed under the warranty. The staff was rude and unhelpful. I explained that I was out of town and had driven on a spare for 100 miles despite that very little help was given. Edit: I understand not having the parts. The rudeness on the phone was unnecessary. Also if at all possible assistance could have been given with taking it somewhere else. I was hours away from my home. I dropped it of at night near midnight. I could not find the drop box. I have never been to this town before. I offered to bring the keys in or unlock remotely. Instead, I was told norhing could be done. This is fine, but all of the attitude is NOT necessary. I have never been spoken to so rudely at a toyota service center. ”
