Learn More about Horsepower

One of the most recognizable terms when car shopping is the usage of the term horsepower or HP. Every car review ever given uses this stat to describe their car. The numbers are always thrown out there, but what do they really mean?

Horsepower is a term used to convey a unit of power. The term came from the 18th century when an engineer compared the power of one horse to that of a steam engine. This was used as a comparable unit for everyone to easily understand. Over time the terms stuck and have been used ever since. In modern-day usage, this term can indicate triple digit numbers (from 100-400). The higher the number, the more powerful the car or truck. Many smaller engines can have 100-150 HP or Horsepower. Bigger engines can have upwards of 250-400.
